Ever since I can remember, I’ve been a fan of geography. I’ve always wanted to know where places were, who lived in those places, what the people who lived in those places did and what they ate and what languages they spoke and how they dressed.
I loved social studies lessons in elementary and middle school where we got to fill in maps, and I always got 100% on my world geography tests. As I got older I became more interested in world literature and political and cultural history from Africa, Asia, the Carribbean, South America – in addition to the usual suspects from the U.S. and Europe.
When I taught middle school humanities, my favorite units were the geography ones. I had a huge 8′ x 20′ push pin map of the world adoring one entire wall of my classroom, and as many books on individual countries as my classroom budget could afford and as the shelves on my bookcases could hold.
We have world maps and globes throughout our house, and I’ve bought all the Geo Puzzles for my kids to build. We try to eat a new cuisine frequently and I help them understand the importance of being culturally competent by familiarizing themselves with the world beyond their personal experiences and understandings.
As a family, we are saving and planning for a trip somewhere around the world next summer. Leading candidates so far are Portugal and Morocco, Costa Rica, Peru and Ecuador, or possibly Southeast Asia somewhere.
